Dear Representative ___________:
The Honorable _____________
United States Senate
Washington, DC 20510
Dear Senator _______________:
As a member of your district, I am writing to enlist your support for the Uterine Fibroid Research and Education Act of 2005.
Three in every four American women have uterine fibroids. Most women require medical care to treat the condition. In many cases the treatment is a hysterectomy. Uterine fibroids affect women across all racial boundaries, with African American women three to nine times more likely to have them. Uterine fibroids impact the lives of women negatively in many, many ways: from pelvic pain that interfere with a woman’s ability to work and take care of her family to such excess bleeding that she may become anemic.
The Uterine Fibroid Research and Education Act is being championed by two of your fellow legislators, Senator Barbara A. Mikulski (D-MD) and Representative Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-OH). Both felt so strongly about this women’s health issue that they re-introduced this legislation in their respective branches of Congress in June of 2005.
Senator Mikulski and Representative Tubbs, along with organizations such as The Women’s Sexual Health Foundation are advocating passage of S 1289 and HR 3034 which increases funding for research and education on uterine fibroids.
We need to learn the cause of uterine fibroids and how to prevent and treat them. The funding requested in the Uterine Fibroid Research and Education Act is the first step in this process. I urge you to support this important piece of legislation.
Sincerely,
